The Rainbow League Book Three

Nate and Carlos have been the best of friends since their childhood playing baseball together in the Bronx. For the past few years, Nate’s been in love with Carlos, though he’s never acted on it and Carlos has never given any indication that he returns Nate’s feelings. Nate has finally given up, determined to move on and find someone else, especially now that Carlos has shacked up with his boyfriend, Aiden.

Carlos doesn’t understand why Nate has suddenly gotten weird, acting cold and distant at team practice for the Rainbow League. But if that’s how things are going to be, Carlos is done trying to figure Nate out. But then Aiden reveals he has a violent side, and Carlos needs his best friend’s support. On top of that, he starts to realize his feelings for Nate might not be limited to friendship. But in the aftermath of his relationship with Aiden, and with Nate having problems of his own, the timing is all wrong to make a real relationship work. As emotions run high, both have a hard time figuring out what is real and what is just convenient.

I'm a big fan of the friends to lovers story, but this one didn't quite work for me. I liked that they supported each other when crap hit the fan in their respective personal lives. So, the friends part was good ... really awesome. It was the lovers part that was super flat and disappointing. At about 80 percent, I wrapped it up. Life's too short to read books that don't move you.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.com Review (A Jeri Review)

Rating 3 stars out of 5

Nate and Carlos have been the best of friends since their childhood playing baseball together in the Bronx. For the last few years, Nate’s been in love with Carlos, though he’s never acted on it, and Carlos has never given any indication that he returns Nate’s feelings. Nate has finally given up, determined to move on and find someone else, especially now that Carlos has shacked up with his boyfriend Aiden.

Carlos doesn’t understand why Nate has suddenly gotten weird, acting cold and distant at team practice for the Rainbow League. But if that’s how things are going to be, Carlos is done trying to figure Nate out. But then Aiden starts to show he might not be the man Carlos thought he was, and Carlos needs his best friend’s support. Worse, he starts to realize his feelings for Nate might not be limited to friendship. But in the aftermath of his relationship with Aiden, and with Nate having problems of his own, the timing is all wrong to make a real relationship work. As emotions run high, both have hard time figuring out what is real and what is just convenient.

Sometimes it takes something to open your eyes to the possibilities. For Nate, it was watching Carlos dating Aidan.

Nate and Carlos have been friends since they were kids. Growing up in the same neighborhood of the Bronx, their mutual love of the Yankees and baseball in general, and Nate practically growing up in Carlos’ Puerto Rican family since he only had a single working mother.

They played on the same team in the league and were both out of the closet. Everyone assumed they were together until Carlos started dating Aidan.

Nate is losing his chance to have Carlos as his own- but he is also losing his friendship with Carlos. He never hangs out after games with his friends, he leaves directly after practice and doesn’t say much to anyone. Until he shows up at Nate’s door with a bruise on his face.

Watching these two navigate through their friendship to something more was really beautiful. They struggle to find the balance between friends and lovers, while navigating baseball, Carlos’ huge family and a rebound situation. You just want to cheer for them to make it through.

Cover art by Aaron Anderson who did the covers for the first two stories as well.I loved having both main characters on the cover of the book, which again, follows the same art as the previous two.
The title of this book is fitting since we’ve been waiting for this couple to get together since the first book. Carlos and Nate have been best friends since childhood but that’s all they were. Until Nate realizes he wants more from Carlos in book one of this series. He spends two books pining away for his missed chance with Carlos, who starts dating Adrien. Nate sees Carlos is happy and crazy about Adrien so he does what he thinks is the right thing and keeps his feelings to himself. Except everyone but Carlos sees how Nate feels about him. Even Adrien. This causes some conflict because Adrien does his best to drive a wedge between Carlos and Nate. Sadly it works.

So we start off this book with Nate and Carlos somewhat estranged. The Rainbow baseball league is about to start up again so they have to spend time together since they’re on the same team. The guys manage to talk it out and promise to make time for each other. Carlos isn’t the same though. He never goes out for drinks after practice or games without Adrien being present. Something is off but Nate’s afraid to push too hard out of fear of pushing Carlos away again.

Sadly I didn’t love this one as much as I’d hoped to. I realize it would be kind of a jerk move for Carlos to just up and dump Adrien but they were a couple for a good chunk of this book. After 2 years of dating Carlos moved in with Adrien. Things aren’t great but Carlos seems to feel he made a commitment to Adrien so he has to do his best to make it work. Except Adrien turns into a possessive selfish control freak. As the book progresses he gets angrier and angrier until he basically forces Carlos to leave him. Then go back to him. Then leave him again. The Carlos from this book is not the Carlos from book 1 or 2. I did think it showed how a seemingly confident and fun guy could be slowly broken down with subtle manipulation and verbal abuse. There is some physical abuse later. Which is how we FINALLY get rid of Adrien. Wahoo!

Nate is there for Carlos when he leaves Adrien and has nowhere else to go. They fall right back into their friendly relationship. Eventually Carlos gets that Nate has feelings for him. The timing isn’t great though. Carlos is freshly out of a bad relationship. Nate’s mom is dying. They do tell each other how they feel but want it to work between them so they hold off on taking their relationship to the next level. This was frustrating as well. Yes they need time to work their s*** out but I felt like I had already waited long enough honestly. You can only hold out so long before the anticipation turns into come on already!

As always I love all the cameos from the other characters in this series. My favorite is still Ty. He added some much needed humor to the story while being there for his friends. This book was a long drawn out angsty love story. While I was happy to see them finally together, the need for them to be together was lost while they took the long way around to love.
I waited so long for their story. Glad it all came together for them. Such a beautiful love story! Just perfect!
Probably my favorite book of the series. I've been waiting on Nate and Carlos's story since the first book. Worth the wait. Well done.
