Before the Big Flood, Liz Green worried more about hiding detention notes, the activities of her rebellious friends, and mental illness than global climate change. She lives on the Texas Coastal Plain with her single mother, brilliant older brother, and socially awkward but clever younger brother. But now the water keeps rising, and her mother, Leah, has bigger problems than Liz. The suburban family, their neighbors, and billions of people all over the world are stuck between the rising seas and snarled land escape routes. The military and authorities are overwhelmed by the scope of the disaster. The wealthy and well-connected rush to expensive sea habitats. Ordinary people cannot expect to get help in time. You do not need to construct an actual raft to be Raft People, but you have to float. The family finds a website called "RaftPeople.com" which coordinates the efforts of ordinary people who plan to construct homemade crafts in order to float out of the disaster. They have to reply upon the natural talents of Liz's younger brother, Mark, a middle aged former female special forces diver named Shirley, and an eighty year old retired naval engineer. This small group of neighbors decides to become Raft People to escape before their Houston suburb floods. Overwhelmed and ill prepared, they must struggle against nature and gangs of hoodlums. The military may provide some help, but urban guerrillas have chosen to use this opportunity to take out the government, and the rebels do not seem to mind some collateral damage. Can this group of children, adults, and old people make it to the "Up Above" before the sea rises? Liz Green narrates the story of Leah's Folly, her Raft People craft, from the perspective of a young adult therapist, even though most events occurred when she was sixteen to seventeen years old. The story also includes one habitat dome, Constant, a refuge for the rich and powerful, naval rescue efforts, and some other Raft People crafts - Bayou Drink, Devil's Island, Sisters of Mercy, Mighty Duck, and Moby Dick. The other rafts are similar to Leah's Folly, but different too, as you may imagine from the craft's names. Raft People should appeal to adults, young adults, and mature teenagers. It falls into the category of post-apocalyptic fiction, but is also an adventure and coming of age story. There is even a bit of steam punk, science fiction, dystopian fiction, alternate history, spirituality, and the supernatural added to the mix. Can Liz Green face her fears and travel back to Leah's Folly and the time of the Big Flood in order to move on and help others? "If you like a good novel with realistic characters that you actually find yourself caring about, I think you will enjoy this yarn as much as I did!" --Robert J.R. Graham, author of THE SEVENTH JOURNEY series "A premise that is more believable than most and the author tells the story with a voice of realism that will capture your attention almost from the first paragraph." --Gather.com

Raft People Book 1 Volume 1 ML Katz 9781618682598 Books

For me, one of the best books I've read including all the New York Times best sellers. I just really enjoyed the unique, original and realistic (that hopefully will never happen in my life time) story. Loved the main and all supporting characters that kept the story so interesting. For once I had no problem keeping track of them which I'm going to credit to excellent writing. Finally, just wanted to mention that as you may be able to tell, out of the hundreds of books I've read in my lifetime, this is my first review and probably my last. Just needed to let everyone know how much I loved this book.

Raft People Book 1 Volume 1 ML Katz 9781618682598 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed this story of survival and community. A 17 year old girl, her family and their community are facing a natural disaster and have to pull together to survive. I really like the author's focus on the importance of the community working together and contributing to the welfare of everyone on their raft. The author did a great job of exploring the personalities of the individual and engaging me in their stories. The details of the scenes and the depth of the emotions of the characters in the story drew on my emotions and I found myself relating to their trials and triumphs. The characters in this book are so human and relatable to people in real life that I felt that connection to them that I don't feel in many books. This story is an excellent book and I recommend it for adults and teenagers alike.
A not atypical EOTWAWKI tale, this time rising (and rising and rising) waters. The survivors are folks who use their brains to live and their hearts to maintain their humanity. I particularly want to applaud the treatment of schizophrenia, which ails one of the characters. The point is made that this is an illness (not a weakness of will) that can be mostly controlled with medication--just like the heart disease that troubles another survivor. The illnesses are not the centerpiece of the book, but part of the character development, like another figure's math genius or another's determination. Just like life, people with mental issues seem to often become counselors, so the sketches of after-the-catastrophe ring true as well. And family stays family.
New genre for me and I like it. I like it maybe 4.5 stars. I read it quickly because I was engaged in the story and only the odd typo caught my eye. People, good proofreading and editing cost real money. Often big money. Maybe M.L. Katz didn't allow them to happen because of arrogance, or stinginess. Maybe M.L. Katz couldn't afford what it takes to make a book perfect. But the lack of contractions did make sentences clunk at time. I'd like to see more flowing, natural dialogue.

So it's an interesting tale. It took my mind down pathways yet unexplored. It seems I like disaster epics and I didn't know that. I learned a lot about flotation and displacement. (And admittedly I did question some of the assumptions.) But okay, all that aside, I liked this book a lot. I looked for Book II and was disappointed not to be able to buy it.
Raft People is an interesting, insightful self-exploration of a post-Apocalyptic survivor. Given the recent hurricanes and tsunamis that have caused chaos, death, and suffering, the grim tale of a giant flood (not a Noah's ark flood- although the ark is referenced numerous times) seems logical and familiar. Another interesting topic that is explored in this book is the prospect of the polar ice-caps melting and breaking away. This book brings those fears home and plops them in the reader's lap. Told in a methodological stream-of-consciousness, this story starts at the end and ends at the beginning. It is a fascinating read that is so detailed that you almost find yourself asking if this has already occurred and your present life is just a dream. In fact, the storyline is so believable that I even skimmed through the few grammatical errors I found. Usually, those things stop me in my tracks. Even if you put aside the excellent character development, well-thought-out setting, and incredible sense of believability that Katz has created, the plot itself is worth the read. Loved it!
Catastrophe happens when oil drillers breach the sea-floor of the Gulf of Mexico resulting in the discovery of an immense pocket of water that will cause major flooding and change the entire shape of North America. Mountain tops will become islands and entire cities will disappear under the rising waters. The severity of this natural disaster is all but denied in the beginning by Government Officials.

Single mother Leah Green and her teenage children, Andrew (highly intelligent), Liz (troubled schizophrenic being treated with medication) and Mark (extraordinarily gifted yet socially awkward) live on the Texas Coastal Plain and they are in the path of the rising waters. In the mass panic roads become blocked and supplies become limited. Leah happens upon an online group called Raft People. This group of people are intent upon building some type of floating craft that will let them ride out the flood until they are able to reach the Dry Line~~the new coast. Along with their resilient neighbors, one of whom happens to be a retired Naval Engineer, Leah and her family begins construction of "Leah's Folly".

Fifteen years after the Big Flood, now a thirty-one year old psychologist, Liz tells us this harrowing story in the form of an essay that her nearly estranged older brother Andrew asks her to write. Made up of people who are called upon to become leaders in a time of utter disaster, these well developed characters come together to form a floating community who will set the standards for other Raft People.

There were moments of triumph and moments of despair. Ms. Katz found the perfect blend. Well done. 4.5 stars.
